AbstractFew general practitioners (GPs) working outside academic institutions do research. The availability of advice is the most important factor associated with research activities. Thus, linkage with academic practice facilitates research. The difficulties encountered by non-academic GPs in doing research include the particular setting of general practice, literature search (availability and experience), inadequate ancillary staff, insufficient funding and deficient research training if any. Personal interest and satisfaction are the most important motivating factors for GPs to do research. In Hong Kong, similar difficulties seem to be responsible for the scarcity of research work among GPs, though there is no study to explore this area. Suggestions to remove these barriers are encouraged.
