Abstract | Prenatal diagnosis is an integral part of modern obstetric practice dealing with antenatal detection and management of fetal abnormality. With recent advances in imaging technology and molecular genetics, more and more congenital abnormalities can be diagnosed antenatally. Prenatal diagnosis starts with screening out pregnant women with risk factors for fetal abnormality. Once screened out, these women should be promptly referred for prenatal diagnosis. Preconception counselling is an important extension of antenatal care especially in the context of prenatal diagnosis. Family physicians play an important role in both prenatal screening and preconception counselling. The article describes the current practice of prenatal diagnosis in Hong Kong. |
