AbstractIn June 1999, Professor Elizabeth (Betty) Davies, the school of Nursing of the University of British Columbia in Canada, visited the Department of Nursing and Health Sciences at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). In the article, Professor Davies talked about her work in the field of Palliative Care -- an area of nursing practice to which she has been committed for a number of years, and how her interest in the area began and how it developed over the years. she discussed her research work and her philosophical approach, emphasizing the importance of being passionate about the area of concern. Professor Davies's passion became obvious as she talked about the voices which she listens to: the student nurses' the children, the parents and siblings and finally the practicing nurses. Listening so intently and with compassion has contributed in no small measure to the development of the first Children's Hospice in the United States.
