AbstractEscherichia coli O157:H7 first emerged in 1982 as a human pathogen causing bloody diarrhoea. Two recent large outbreaks occurred in Scotland and Japan in 1996. In Hong Kong, E. coli O157:H7 was isolated in 1997 in a raw beef sample taken from a local fresh provision shop under the food surveillance programme conducted by the Department of Health. The article reports on the case which was the first confirmed human infection by toxigenic E. coli O157:H7 in Hong Kong.
