| Abstract | Difficulties shared by new immigrant families in Hong Kong, which consist of a father from Hong Kong, a Chinese mother and their children, include: the separation of the family, trips back and forth between Hong Kong and China on a two-way permit, the long wait for a one-way permit, the despair felt by families faced with the complexities of the system. The article features complex regulations that the distraught families faced. It also points out problems for the new immigrant families, including: cramped lodgings and strained family relationships of a re-united family, problems of schooling and communication difficulties of the children, the disadvantage in finding work, as well as stormy marital relations. |
