Abstract | George Sze-kwong Chao is vice-chairman of Wah Kwong Shipping Holdings, which was established in 1952 by his father, Tsong-yea Chao. George's elder brother, Frank Sze-bang Chao, was appointed chairman of the Hong Kong-listed company when the elder Chao retired in 1997. Wah Kwong's core business has always been owning and operating ships. Over the years, the group has diversified into a range of other business areas, such as container and oil terminal operations, feeder services, property development and food processing. Its 19 vessels -- bulk carriers and tankers -- have a total capacity of about 1.2 million dwt. Here, George Chao, who is also a former chairman of the Hong Kong Shipowners' Association, shares in the article his views of the freight market and other issues affecting local shipowners. |
