AbstractThe article studies the prevalence of over the counter (OTC) medication use and to investigate certain health beliefs among elderly OTC users through the cross sectional face to face questionnaire interview. The subjects include eight hundred and five community dwelling elderly people aged 60 or above from 3 large elderly centres in Hong Kong. The study discovers that the relatively high prevalence of OTC use and the general lack of knowledge and lack of awareness of the possible side effects is an important health issue in Hong Kong. Better health education and communication between doctors and patients should be encouraged and tighter regulations on the sale of OTC should be initiated in the near future.
