AbstractSilk production and export boomed after China adopted reform and open policies in 1978, growing at an annual average rate of over 10 percent. The latest boom began in 1992, when the output value of 20 major silk producing areas rose by 14.4 percent. In 1993, the output rose by another 23.3 percent to 22,650 million Yuan, but in 1994 the industry went into recession. The article features why and how the Chinese government revives the industry.
