AbstractIn early November 1997, Vice Premier Zhu Rongji was quoted as saying that China is to cut its cotton spinning capacity by more than 23 percent by the year 2000 to ease serious over-capacity problems. Mr Zhu, who was visiting Shanghai while President Jiang Zhemin was in the United States (US), said China would cut cotton spinning capacity by 10m spindles by the end of 20 century from the current 41.71m spindles, according to a report in the Shanghai Securities News.
