Abstract | The article provides a book review on "Une societe sans pere ni mari: Les Na de China (A society without Father of Husband: The Chinese Na) by Cai Hua, a young Yunnan researcher. The Na, known as the Mo-so, Na-khi, or Naxi -- comprise a small ethnic group of some 277,000 persons according to the 1990 census who occupy an area in the Chinese foothills of the Himalayas, straddling the provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan. The book opens with a classical description of the group under consideration, offering in succession its geographical setting, social organisation, an overview of history, the land ownership system and ending with a few details concerning religious life and the ethnic environment. |
