Abstract | Although Guangdong is a province which has been in a process of rapid economic development for over a decade now, it still has a relatively poor track-record in the area of birth control, and represents a notable exception as far as family structures are concerned. For the last 20 years, both the birth and natural growth rates for the province have consistently been above the national rates. As shown by the data from the last two censuses complemented by various sample surveys, Cantonese families also stand out from the national averages both in terms of the size of families and their complexity and structure. The province's inhabitants have more children and live in larger and more complex households than the majority of their compatriots. |
