| Abstract | Hongkong Telecom (HKT)'s $6.7 million deal with the Special Administrative Region (SAR) government in January 1998 is set to change the sector dynamics in both international as well as local telecom arena. Not surprisingly, the deal has generated considerable controversy, with comments from Hong Kong Legislative Council, potential telecom competitors and consumers. While analysts feel that the deal is fair to all parties involved, some believe that either the level of compensation is too low or too high or the hidden costs of this deal may outweigh the perceived benefits. |
