Abstract | Maersk's truly global span ensures that it will not be the subject of mergers for some time to come. Its container fleet comprises 235,000 units or 380,000 TEU. It continues to shake up the industry with its ever-growing capacity for container ships. When the Regina Maersk was launched in March 1996, the 318-metre vessel (longer than the height of the Eiffel Tower), she became the world's largest container vessel with a capacity of 6,000 TEU. She also had the world's most powerful engine, a 12-cylinder, 74,460 bhp MAN B&W, which gives her a speed of 25 knots. The Regina Maersk was first in a series of 12 identical vessels ordered by Maersk to be gradually put into service by 1998. |
