| Abstract | Of all the major information technology projects undertaken in Hong Kong 1997, the automated fare collection (AFC) system which uses the Octopus transit card stands out as having the greatest impact in terms of the number of peoples' lives it affects. As the world's largest multi-modal (transport) contactless smartcard project, it has swiftly been embraced by about 2.3 million commuters (as of November) since its launch, conveniencing the lives of about one-third of Hong Kong's population. |
