AbstractRapid economic development and the growth of interdependence in the Asia-Pacific region may not be enough to silence the guns indefinitely. In the future, there will be three layers of challenges to Asia-Pacific security. Foremost are balanced relations among the three great powers, the United States, China and Japan. Second are the potential flashpoints, Korea being the most urgent and Taiwan the most complicated. Third are potential instabilities in some countries that could have regional implications. And in a period of reduced economic dynamism, there will be problems of sustainable growth. Another focus is the need for good governance and political development, essential for establishing the sound macroeconomic fundamentals on which further expansion will depend.
