| Abstract | Asia contributed $3 billion of its $45 billion in sales in 1996. The list of corporate behemoths of The Asiaweek 1000, is based on results for fiscal year 1996, but the figures already foreshadow the region's current economic malaise, where the regional slump is seen from the perspective of decades. For the great majority of enterprises in the 1000, however, the region's currency woes and economic downturn are but the latest, if perhaps the toughest, challenge in their long climb to corporate gianthood. The situation of Taiwan, Hong Kong and China are mentioned in the article. |
