| Abstract | Historians may will remember 29 November, 1997, as the beginning of the end for the Kuomintag (KMT) and the end of the beginning for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). As the dust settled from elections for Taiwan's county chiefs and city mayors, the KMT had half as many seats as before (8), while the DPP had twice as many (12). The article discusses why the KMT lost the election. |
