AbstractThe Hong Kong/South China region is an area of considerable change in terms of the planning and provision of transport infrastructure. This is a result of the dynamic growth of the Hong Kong economy, also of the role of Guangdong in the move to the socialist market economy in the whole of China, and the approaching integration of Hong Kong back into China. The experience of Hong Kong/South China shows up a dichotomy in the relative situation of investment in ports and airports vis a vis roads and railways, which is also present to some extent in the East European context. The problems of border issues and environmental impact figure prominently in transport infrastructural planning in Hong Kong/South China, along with relative uncertainties as to how infrastructural planning will proceed in the post-1997 period.
