| Abstract | As ever, the most crucial matter facing Taiwan remains relations with China. Following the smooth transfer of Hong Kong to Chinese control in July 1997, hopes were high that Sino-Taiwan contacts - severed in June 1995 by Beijing - would resume in spring 1998. The prospects for this are looking dim, however. Neither side is prepared to compromise over sovereignty-related issues. |
