| Abstract | The article reports Hong Kong students' attitudes towards English learning before and during the transitional period to Chinese rule. It starts with a brief account of the status of English teaching in Hong Kong schools in the 150 years prior to 1997 to give the context in which local students learn. It goes on to review studies of language attitudes and second language achievements to give a theoretical background for the three surveys conducted in the 15 years prior to 1997. |
