| Abstract | Following Hong Kong's transfer to Chinese rule, Beijing has set its sights on taking Taiwan "back" into the embrace of the motherland. Beijing threatens to use force against Taiwan should it seek formal independence, but Taiwan comes under the security umbrella from the United States (USA) and Japan, both of whom have a keen interest in Taiwan's security and stability for strategic and economic reasons. |
