AbstractTaiwan is poised for strong economic expansion into the next century. A broad political consensus has paved the way for sweeping economic liberalisation. The government has been promoting the concept of Taiwan as a "regional operations centre" for multinational as well as domestic companies. This concept has been greeted with some scepticism. But there are unlikely to help the idea become reality. Some problems of finance, telecoms, oil and electricity are discussed in this article.
