| Abstract | It was with a mixture of interest and uneasiness that Taiwan observed the handover of Hong Kong to China on July 1st 1997. For obvious historical reasons, the Republic of China (ROC) is closely linked to the territory, not only economically but also on the human and cultural level: Hong Kong and Taiwan are, along with Macau, the only areas of China to have escaped coming under the control of the communist regime in Peking after 1949. But at the moment, when Hong Kong is undergoing a change of sovereignty, this privileged relationship is, for Taiwan, a matter of serious preoccupation as well. This article discusses the future of political relations between Hong Kong and Taiwan. |
