AbstractSeven years before 1997, China's Uighur Muslims launched a low-level insurgency in Xinjiang. In 1997 it has become a terror campaign of bombings and assasssinations. Beijing has responded with executions and jailings, even as it dilutes the Uighre poplation with waves of Han Chinese migrants. Now the insurgents are calling for holy war. In this article, the author reviews Xinjiang's uprisings in the ten years before 1997 and discusses the desperation among Uighur people raised by the Beijing's Han Chinese migration policy.
