| Abstract | There are now many effective and well-tolerated antiviral agents available, unlike previous antivirals that suffered from problems with delivery, poor side-effect profile and limited efficacy. Antiviral agents for herpesviruses such as aciclovir, ganciclovir, famciclovir, foscarnet and valaciclovir are now in widespread use, and newer agents such as PMEA, HPMPC, and BV-Ara-U are undergoing clinical trials. A combination of improving currently available agents and the development of new agents should result in improved control of infection with herpesviruses. Resistance to antiviral agents is being detected more frequently in the laboratory, and is likely to become an increasing clinical problem. This review focuses on the currently available antivirals for treatment of herpesvirus infections. |
