A new shipyard is under construction in Waigaoqiao. The project was started in October 1993. A 207-hectare area with a 1.5 kilometres coastaline has been reclaimed from the East China Sea at a cost of 150 million yuan, The total investment will be 4.26 billion yuan, which is being provided by the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), the Shanghai Municipal Government and the Baoshan Iron & Steel Corporation.
