AbstractIn an International Herald Tribune report on 26 September 1996, China researchers and aid workers of the World Bank were quoted as saying that recent findings confirmed their earlier conclusion that more and more Chinese in rural and urban areas were being left behind in the race to get rich. However, the bank's research gave no estimate of the increase in China's average income as a result of rapid economic growth since 1992. But it maintains that while there had been "an enormous reduction" in poverty since China began its reforms in the late 1970s, official statistics have tended to understate its real extent.
