Abstract | Over the years, piped water from the Dongjiang has proved to be extremely reliable and was never interrupted because of politics. The actual quantity delivered to Hong Kong can also be adjusted to accomodate the local needs during years of abnormal rainfall. There is, however, a growing concern about the quantity of the water which is deteriorating as a result of economic development in the Dongjiang area. While Hong Kong becomes increasingly reliant on this imported water, people must also acknowledge Shenzhen and the neighbouring cities as keen competitive users of the resource. |
