| Abstract | Taiwan's justice minister has warned that Taiwan was in danger of becoming another Sicily. Sicily, Italy, has long been considered an intractable stronghold of mafia corruption. After decades of free-wheeling market capitalism, corruption has grown deep roots in Taiwan too. Though to date Hong Kong has kept corruption in check, pessimists worry that Taiwan's corrupt officialdom may present a vision of things to come. |
