AbstractPneumonia is defined as clinical or radiological consolidation of the lung parenchyma. It is therefore pathologically, clinically and radiologically distinct from other forms of lower respiratory infection such as acute on chronic bronchitis. It is the commonest cause of fever world-wide and the 4th commonest cause of death in Hong Kong. This article will attempt to outline the rationale and important background for treatment of immuno-competent adult patients who suffer from community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in Hong Kong.
