| Abstract | Production of Chinese Akoya pearls decreased in 1996 but quality has improved and the percentage of pearls suitable for use in jewellery increased to more than 60 percent from below 50 percent of total production. Production of Chinese Akoya pearls suitable for jewellery in 1996 was estimated at about 15 tonnes, according to producers and suppliers in China and Hong Kong. |
