| Abstract | China's entry to the World Trade Organization (WT0), often rumored to be around the corner, now sems genuinely close -- possibly within year 1998. United States (U.S.) negotiators say Beijing may be ready to make concessions previously deemed unacceptable. At the same time, pressure is mounting on the U.S. to compromise. China's WTO entry thus seems only a matter of time. When it happens, Clinton is likely to propose the same permanent Most Favored Nation status for China that the large majority of American's other trading partners already enjoy. That may be when MFN opponents, sensing a truly significant fight ahead, march. |
