Abstract | When a China-owned vessel, the Far East Glory, sailed into Taiwan 's Kaohsiung port in April 1996 flying the island's Nationalist flag, it was not out to make waves. The symbolism was more that of conciliation than confrontation. And the gesture was reciprocated. Days later, the Uni-Order, owned by Taiwan's Uniglory Marine Corp., headed for Xiamen on China's southwestern coast - flying the five stars and red field of the People's Republic. For the dozen shipping companies plying the strait, however, the big question is not which flag is flying on deck, but how much cargo lies below. |
