Abstract | The original text in Chinese of this article was published in 1935. It is one of several written by the author (1902-1988) around that time in reaction to the moral order campaign instigated by Chiang Kai-shek with the aim of "morally rearming" the country, mainly through heavy doses of the Confucian classics. Shen rejects the Keomintang's remedies and shows how any attempt to anchor the nation to the values which have hindered its development so far will inevitably fail. For until such time as the Chinese citizen has been made aware of his rights and duties, he will continue to remain the dutiful subject or revert to his fundamentally irresponsible self whenever the state goes into crisis. |
