Abstract | When Deng Xiaoping died in February 1997, some United States' newsmen predicted China would be convulsed by a violent upheaval, perhaps a totalitarian crackdown. Not only were these forecasts way off the mark, they provided a telling insight into how some in the United States media misunderstand and misreport the China story. Journalists Richard Bernstein and Ross H. Munro are examples of this kind of thinking. Their greatly hyped book, The Coming Conflict with China, is discussed in this article. |
