Abstract | Referring to a recent public opinion survey, the governor said that 90% of Hong Kong people were satisfied with their life and three-quarters of them were content with the government. Another poll, which Patten did not mention, concluded that two-thirds of the population were "happy" about the fast-approaching transfer of sovereignty to China, and only 11% percent not so. The chief reason for the territory's buoyant mood is the healthy state of the economy, says Baptist University academic Michael DeGolyer. If it suffers a downturn, he warns, people may start thinking dark thoughts. |
