| Abstract | The Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance has become effective in Hong Kong since 20 December 1996. It is the first time the territory has enacted laws to protect privacy with respect to personal data. This symbolizes a rise in the general awareness and understanding of basic human rights in a progressive society. Stephen Lau, the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data is interviewed about the new Ordinance, its implication for Hong Kong citizens, the private and public sectors, and society as a whole. |
