Abstract | Water pollution has plagued China's Dongjiang (East) River. Since adopting the Open Door Policy in 1978, economies in the area - particularly those of Dongguan and Shenzhen - have developed rapidly. The result has been a cornucopia of product output: plastic bags, handbags, hardware, leather and food products. There are also several vegetable and pig farms. Unfornately with the factories and farms comes industrial waste, animal waste and pesticide residue. All of it headed into the Dongjiang River. The author discusses the pollution problem in this article. |
