AbstractThe Hong Kong Legislative Council (Legco) will be disbanded when the territory becomes a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 1 July 1997. These are difficult times for Hong Kong's "democrats," a term encompassing not just the Democratic Party (DP), led by Martin Lee Chu Ming, but several other smaller groups as well as independents. They are united in advocating direct elections to the legislature as the best way of preserving Hong Kong's promised local autonomy after 1997. But they differ on how far they should compromise with China and participate in Beijing-appointed handover bodies.
