AbstractIt is difficult for birds to find a place to rest in Hong Kong's so-called "concrete forest". However, in the New Territories there is a place for birds not only to rest, but also to dwell permanently. Mai Po Nature Reserve is in the northwest New Territories, facing Deep Bay. It has marvelous natural scenery and is a haven for both birds and city dwellers. Because of the ecological significance, the government designated Mai Po as a "Site of Special Scientific Interest" in 1976. This article looks at the importance of Mai Po to the birds and to the environmental protection.
