| Abstract | President Lee Teng-hui wants Taiwan businessmen to go slow in China. Also out as an investment destination: South Africa, which has decided to break diplomatic ties with Taipei in favor of Beijing. Hong Kong is also getting to be a problem, though it is not really a major destination of Taiwan money. In December 1996, Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang party transferred $30 million in Hong Kong assets to Singapore because of fears of confiscation when Beijing resumes sovereignty in July 1997. |
