Abstract | Controlling the flow of overseas information into China is hardly new. In April 1996, Beijing introduced rules requiring foreign-owned financial wire services to channel their reports through Xinhua, the official news agency. While many saw the move as profit-motivated, officials said its aim was to promote greater market stability. Cutting out "cultural pollutants" on the Internet will be tougher, especially with pornography. Authorities are expected to introduce new policies in 1997 that will cut networking costs and allow greater access to domestic and international news sites. |
