Abstract | Hong Kong-based journalist Xi Yang was supposed to spend 12 years in a Beijing prison. In early 1997, in an unexpected move, the 40-year-old mainlander was released after serving just 34 months of his term, and allowed to return to Hong Kong. His release, six months ahead of the handover, as the article writes, is apparently intended to calm nerves about the territory's return to China. |
