Abstract | Due to the rapid growth in communications, 2.5 Gb/s optical cable systems are being used more and more in the long-distance and local networks in China. In anticipation of the next step in the development of high-speed SDH transmission, tests and trails are now being made with the 10 Gb/s system, which may be expected to be put into operation in the next two or three years. At present, two forms of multiplexing techniques are vying for application in practical systems, i.e., the time-division-multiplex (TDM) and the wave-length-division-multiplex (WDM). This article introduces the 10 Gb/s TDM optical cable system and the 2.5 Gb/s x 4 WDM system. The prospects for implementing the 10Gb/s system in China are also discussed. |
