AbstractTo help regulate the jewellery industry in China and protect the interests of consumers, the government in China will implement its first national standards for nomenclature and identification of diamonds and coloured gemstones and standards for grading of diamonds with effect from 1 May 1997. The standards were proposed by the Ministry of Geology and Mineral Resources (MGMR) and China State Bureau of Technical Supervision (CSBTS), drafted by the National Gemstone Testing Centre (China) (NGTC) in Beijing, and passed by CSBTS based on Article [1996] 167 of CSBTS in October 1996. Details of the standards are provided in this article.
