AbstractDiabetes Mellitus is a global epidemic disease and the prevalence has been reported to be 4.5% among local Chinese in Hong Kong. The management of diabetes aims at both maintaining optimal glycaemic control and prevention and management of acute and chronic complications. Hypoglycaemia is a common acute complication experienced by diabetic patients treated with oral drugs and insulin. This may occur at home or in the hospital setting. Appropriate and effective management of hypoglycaemia in ward setting is important to provide immediate relief to the patients' suffering and to reduce long term morbidity. In this article, the authors discuss how nurses manage patients' hypoglycaemia in light of the finding of a recent study. It is then followed by a recommended treatment protocol and their suggestions of how to use the experience for effective patient education.
