AbstractBusiness could hardly be better for Hong Kong's Hang Seng Bank. Asia's 49th-largest commercial lender in assets is also the region's third most profitable financial institution. Yet it is among the most conservative: Hang Seng lends out 49 cents of every dollar in deposit, far below the Hong Kong industry norm of 65 cents. Rumors have repeatedly circulated that Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation would sell Hang Seng to the Bank of China, supposedly to curry favor with Beijing. The author analyses the situation.
