AbstractUltrasound scanning at the Prince of Wales Hospital was reduced to meet the Hospital Authority's (HA) requirements for "productivity gains" - a euphemism for cuts. In August 1996, the HA determined that the service would be taken over by the United Christian Hospital (UCH) in Kwun Tong. Patients, mainly from the New Territories and outlying islands will have to travel between the two hospitals at their own expense. Senior physicians have been expressing their concerns - about shuttling patients from one hospital to another for ultrasound scans, the delay in starting services in UCH and the legal aspects of the arrangement - directly to the HA. In the article, physicians from the two hospitals and HA's deputy director of operations responded to the issue.
