AbstractTelecommunications in China entered a phase of rapid development since 1980s, with the construction of optical cable networks proceeding at a very fast rate and the scale of projects getting increasingly larger. In the 8th Five-Year Plan, 23 new optical cable trunk lines will be completed to form a national digital transmission network of Class I trunk lines totalling 33,000 kilometre in length, which will be 1.5 times longer and affording a transmission capacity 10 times as large as the existing cable systems. The optical cable systems built in the 8th Five-Year Plan in China have just laid a foundation for the development of optical communication networks, and for meeting the requirement of communications with the growing national economy.
