Abstract | More programming variety and tighter government control have long been the seemingly contradictory goals for China's cable television sector. According to unofficial estimates, there are between 4,000 and 10,000 operators, of which 1,200 have been approved by the Ministry of Radio, Film and Television. In an effort to bring channels under the rule of central and county authorities, the ministry has announced plans to merge terrestrial and cable operators together under a nationwide network by promising a new and broader bandwidth than is presently available. |
